Faculty was aptly named. There was a clinicality to their beers. A sterility to their space. What came across as charming Scandinavian-inspired minimalism to some evoked merely emptiness in others. Go figure – but then again, Ingmar Bergman films aren’t for everyone.
This fermentation outfit also brews kombucha (yes, yes, Vancouver, we know). Their kombucha was pretty good. Their beers, however, were generally panned, but not without their defenders. Unfortunately, Faculty could best be expressed by an indifferent shrug; a disappointment considering the anticipation that greeted their opening. Perhaps they took the theme implied by their name too far – their beers were far too reminiscent of academic writing: dry and dull, watery, palatable but entirely lacking in panache.
The profs at Faculty have one discovery worth mentioning. They appear to have been able to brew Christmas into a summer beer. Their Minzeweizen, a beer made with peppermint tea, had a light bite but was eminently drinkable. Even those who hated everything else about the place acknowledged that this beer was, at the very least, ‘alright’, but several folks genuinely enjoyed it a lot.
A recommendation for Faculty cannot come without caveats. If you’re looking for a beer in the neighbourhood that reminds you of pleasant winters past that’s easily drinkable on a hot summer day, and you want someplace you can bring your dog inside, and you like ‘#brandz’ but think 33 Acres are too pretentious, and you find Scandinavian minimalism charming instead of soulless, we heartily encourage you to visit Faculty.
If not, it’s another brewery with steel and wood and nice branding and beers that’s fine enough.
