A number of breweries have opened up in Metro Vancouver in the last 18 months, but none of them have really managed to capture the full-throated attention of the public, which is somewhat to be expected when you have literally 50 breweries within an hour’s drive of one another.
But perhaps the best of the new recruits is Luppolo. While it hasn’t done anything to garner huge attention, it has carved out a solid niche for itself, by dint of being fairly solid in just about everything.
Just to the southwest of the glut of breweries in the Powell/Clark area of the city, Luppolo honours its Italian heritage but doesn’t lean into any sort of gimmick. What you’ll notice most in the tasting room is a touch of sophistication, from the art, to the triangle-themed walls and taster holders, to the light snacks that are a tough above your pepperoni and cheese stick fare.
The beers are relatively diverse and with eight of them generally on tap, there’s enough for most people to enjoy. A Black Lime Gose and Wild Saison Pear were among their standout offerings in 2017, but they keep the menu going with enough interesting one-offs and experiments that it’s worth checking in every quarter or so.
None of their beers at this point are exactly becoming mainstays in the Vancouver scene, partly because of limited distribution and partly because they tend to be good but unmemorable. But there’s something to be said for a place that has established a solid base early. It’s often in the second full year where a brewery takes off in this region, and the possibility is certainly there for Luppolo.
(Disclosure: one of the members of our judging team took part in a brewing competition where his winning prize was having Luppolo make his entry, a Limoncello Sour Weisse, on a limited basis. Our rankings were entered in for Luppolo prior to the competition)
